Nigerian Army Reviews Operations – The Nigerian Army has stated reasons why it has decided to review its operations across the country.

This is coming amidst increasing concerns about safety of life in Nigeria, as well as other associated challenges.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu who addressed a press briefing in Abuja on the matter, said the review is aimed at enhancing Army operations in the country.

He said though the army has recoreded success at its different operations in the country, but there is need for improvement.

Brigadier General Nwachukwu’s briefing centred on the fourth quarter Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Conference scheduled to take place in Sokoto State from 4 December till 10.

Giving an idea of the expected benefits of the conference, General Nwachukwu said it would offer an avenue for a reappraisal of the administrative affairs of the Nigerian Army.

He said the conference would also evaluate and comprehensively review ongoing operational engagements of the Nigerian Army in all theatres of operations across the six geo-political zones within the year.

According to General Nwachukwu, this this would provide the Nigerian Army an in-depth insight to take far-reaching decisions that will be result oriented towards achieving its set objective of addressing the multifaceted security challenges in the country.

The conference would also create an opportunity for the Chief Of Army Staff to have a face-to-face interaction with all the General Officers Commanding, field commanders and other senior officers to provide possible guidance on enhancing the army activities and operations.

The Eagle reports that just last week, militants of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, attacked two military bases in Malam Fatori, Borno State.

ISWAP in a post relating to the attack, said over 30 soldiers were killed.

The group said its fighters invaded a camp located outside the town, using various weapons, killing at least 20 soldiers and injuring about 30 others.

Why over 200 soldiers applied for retirement – Nigerian Army

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army had earlier in August provided reasons behind the voluntary retirement of over 200 of its personnel, describing it as a routine and not an aberration.

Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, who made the clarification in a statement, said at least 243 soldiers in the North-east and other theatres of operation applied to the Chief of Army Staff, Faruk Yahaya, for voluntary retirement.

The soldiers, were drawn from various formations of the army across the country, and are all junior cadres who are mostly fighting against terrorists and insurgents, he said.

“The subjective and unethical report is a distraction and another failed attempt at dampening the morale and fighting will of the loyal, dedicated and patriotic fighting force of the NA.

“Perhaps these impenitent mischief makers need to be schooled to understand that the NA is not a conscript Army and that recruitment into the NA is voluntary with extant policy on discharge and retirement of soldiers and officers respectively, like other organisations,” the statement said.
