‘Why We Refused To March At May Day Celebrations’

It was a colourful march across the nation today for the May Day celebration, but workers in a particular state where workers stayed out of it have stated why.

Not only that they refused to participate in the march, they booed the deputy governor of the state.

In Anambra State, where the celebration took place at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square Awka., workers there said they refused participate in the May Day because of the absence of the Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

They accused the governor of not being workers friendly, afraid to address the long list as presented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

“The governor deliberately dodged the rally because of the long list of the workers’ demands.

“Sending his deputy doesn’t make any sense, as he will definitely not address our demands”, a Tribune report quotes one of the workers as saying anonymously.

Others contended that the absence of the governor was a slap in the face, the repor said.

Another worker, told the reporter, “Workers Day is too important a day for any responsible government to ignore. What else could have kept the governor from honouring his workers?”

Though the march-past eventually held, those who filed out to participate in the exercise reportedly did so to fulfil all righteousness.
