Why Female University Student Committed Suicide

Reason has emerged why a 100-level female student of the Nasarawa State University (NSUK), Keffi, Maikeffi committed suicide.

The Eagle reports that a female student identified as Maikeffi Redemption Sarah reportedly committed suicide, by consuming a poisonous substance.

Sarah, 21 years old, fourth and last born of the family, was an undergraduate of Microbiology .

The incident was said to have occurred on Friday evening at an off-campus lodge near Family and Friends Hotel area, opposite Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and now, the reason given was deep emotions and depression.

“We spoke with her Thursday evening and she was to come to Akwanga from Keffi, attend a wedding today Saturday, then go back tomorrow Sunday, just for me to hear of her sudden death”, her male friend who posted her death on Facebook, confirmed the ugly incident to Vanguardr correspondent on the telephone.

The report added that though some students and neighbours made efforts to neutralise the effect of the poison, it was however futile.

They even administered palm oil her but to no avail.

The lifeless body of the deceased has since been deposited at the mortuary in Keffi, with indications that her body would be interred today Saturday in Akwanga, where she hailed from.

Suicide cases on the rise in Nigeria

The latest incident is coming on the heels of concerns of increasing cases of suicide in the country and challenging economy has been identified as cause.

No fewer than 79 persons reportedly committed suicide in Nigeria in 2022, of which 70 were males and 9 females

Lagos is said to lead the pack with 12 suicide cases; followed by Oyo; 10; Kano, four; Anambra three; Edo, three; Delta, three; Ogun, three; and Rivers, three.

The preponderance of male suicide cases, is assumed to be indicative of the bad economy leading to such cases given that men, being majorly the major income earners have the tendency to be under more pressures.
