What Peter Obi Said About Nnamdi Kanu’s Sentencing

Reactions have continued to flood in over the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Sentencing by the Federal Government.

Kinsman and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the2023 Presidential Mr. Peter Obi, is among the prominent Nigerians who have been reacting to the issue.

For the politician cum philanthropist, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s sentencing represents a failure of leadership, capable of aggravating tensions in the country it.

Obi who gave his reaction in a statement titled: Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility” first submitted that the activist should not have been arrested in the first place.

He thus described his arrest, detention, and eventual conviction as both a failure of leadership and a misreading of the real issues at stake.

In the statement signed by his Media Assistant, Ibrahim Umar, and released today, Peter Obi said that the arrest, detention and conviction of Mazi Nnamdi should compel every well-meaning Nigerian to pause and reflect.

He said the action was worse in a situation whereby the country was grappling with severe economic hardship, escalating insecurity, and the consequences of prolonged poor governance.

The former Anambra State governor stated that application of wisdom, rather than arrest, detention and conviction, was what was required in the case of the Biafra republic agitator.

Obi also cited examples elsewhere where the issues surrounding Kanu’s travails were attended to with political solutions, negotiated settlements and even amnesty, adding that the current government should have toed a similar line.
