Do you know what Juneteenth? Yes or no, it is so important to the United States that its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos would be temporarily shut to commemorate it.
The US Mission, in a post shared on its official X account today, said the temporary closure would happen on Friday, June 19, 2026,
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day,” the statement read.
The temporary closure means routine consular services, including visa appointments, passport processing and other non-emergency services, will not be available during the holiday.
However, regular diplomatic and consular operations are expected to resume after the one-day holiday.

Juneteenth, in lieu of June 19, 1865 is celebrated annually to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
On that date, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of enslaved African-Americans, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
It was not however designated a US national holiday until 2021 following a legislation signed by former President Joe Biden.
Ever since, it has joined the list of important days in the socio-political life of the United State of America.
