UK Delivers Another Blow On Nigeria Asylum Seekers

A policy of the United Kingdom government has landed as another big blow on the neck of Nigerian asylum seekers in that country.

This came by way of an announcement of the Home Office, plans to phase out government-funded asylum hotels.

The not-too-palatable news was broken in a statement posted on official X account of the United Kingdom Home Office today.

The office says some Nigerian asylum seekers were taking advantage of the UK’s generous asylum system tenable through other countries, particularly European countries to enter the United Kingdom.

Its latest policy therefore is part of broader immigration reforms aimed at checkmating those utilising the corridor and bloating the refugee population in the country.

“Right now, migrants are crossing safe countries in Europe because of how generous our asylum system is.

No more. We’re closing asylum hotels and ensuring that those who break our laws have their support removed,” the Home Office said, adding another conditionality.

“If you come to the UK, you must learn our language and play your part.

“From January 2026, migrants will be required to pass tough new English language requirements so they can contribute fully to our national life,” the department added.

The latest policy would no doubt leave far-reaching impact on nigeria’s asylum seekers who prioritise UK as country of visit or residency.
