Truly, hardwork or exemplary public service pays and this was the major undertone at the recent recognition of some Nigerians of sterling qualities from across the sectors.

They included the Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mr Osita Aboloma, immediate past provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Dr Elizabeth Ikem and the coordinator of the TREM Career Academy, Mrs Olufunke Amobi.

For their chains of impressive accomplishments in their different fields, these names soar, and that was the reason, amidst a recitation of impressive profiles of achievements, they were awarded glittering platinum and gold trophies to the applause of the audience.

They thus became the first set of Nigerians to be recogniesd on the platform of The Eagle – theeagle.com.ng –, for exemplary public service, as  a way of telling them well done, on the one side, and to also motivate other Nigerians in public service.

For example, Aboloma’s recognition said he had raised the bar in the campaign against substandard products in the country, deploying unique and novel approaches that have achieved tremendous results.

The Advisory Board of the awards, averred that rather than reeling out sanctions and more sanctions, that Aboloma’s “come and let us reason’ together” approach towards stakeholders and his bridge-building efforts with stakeholders in the economy, have particularly distanced him from other public office holders.

“It made operators in the economy to build confidence on the SON as a regulator to share their challenges with, and understand its policies, rather than a punitive agency to run away from”, they said.

They also made reference to his emphasis on the job creation, and  “Ease of Doing Business” thereby simplifying products registration processes, and getting more entrepreneurs to access services rendered by the SON.

On Dr Ikem,  her award took cognisance of her tireless effort while Provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), which transformed the institution, and resulted in its mainstreaming in the nation’s educational system.

“We recognise the fact that Ikem tirelessly led a team of other staffers to work for the mounting of both the National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in the school as well as the eventual mobilisation of graduates of the NIJ to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme”; these are quite commendable achievements”, the awards organisers said.

The Advisory Board also praised the accomplishments of Olufunke Amobi, a career-driven and result-oriented professional of several years standing, and which have seen her work with several blue chip organisations in very reputable positions.

They however zeroed in on her unique leadership quality at the TREM career Academy, a voluntary service with which she had been dramatically refocused young graduates and job-seeking youths both in TREM and elsewhere.

Amobi leads an academy that regularly holds clinics – TREM Employability scheme, and advisory sessions with youths, which encompasses buoying up their personal confidences, teaching them how to imbibe right work-place mindsets and equipping one’s self with the skills in demand out there.

“The results of these interventions are unquantifiable, and the multiplier effects commendable”, The Eagle Awards Advisory Committee said in its submissions.

The event was chaired by notable Nigerian socialite and publisher of Eko Hot blog, Otunba T.J Abass, who congratulated The Eagle for the initiative and also urging others on the need for exemplary public service, so that the nation could be better.
