Stay Safe – It is easy to lose valuables to pickpockets who now abound, especially in the cities and urban centres.

If you live in Lagos, Kano, Warri; Washington Dc, Miami or even Karachi for that matter, the tendency is that you will mingle with people.

Either at the bus stop, metro station or airport, your body or luggage is certain to come in contact with pick pockets.

These operate differently depending on the area and the prevailing security measures. Here, we begin with some Lagos residents who at one time or another have experienced pick pockets and now share their experiences and proffer their advices:

He adds that predominant cases of loss of valuables relate to to pickpockets and bag snatchers.

Adegunloye added that sometimes, the pick pockets do not fly out from literal nowhere, but could turn out to be fellows walking by you.

Apparently, some of them trail the victims dropping with them from the same bus, or whatever. For Victor Akintunde, a young entrepreneur being alert always, no matter where one is at the moment, is the key to keeping safe.

He said this in relation to cases where these thieves just speed by in a commercial bike, take the victim unawares, snatch whatever they want to, and dash off.

If the neigbhoud is rough and notorious like Agege, walk like a tout yourself as not to draw unnecessary attention. When you are like them, they may ignore you and move to other potential victims.

For Gloria Asabor, a digital strategist: “Pickpockets and bag snatchers come with staying in this state, Lagos is a jungle and one needs to be streetwise in order to survive”.

Lagosians, she added, should shine their eyes, euphemism for 24 hour alertness, wear their back packs as front packs and never to get distracted when on the move.

Mr. Emmanuel Otuekong, an upcoming actor stated that when his phone was taken by pickpockets, he immediately ran to phone company where he bought it, Slot to see if it could be tracked all to no avail.

His boss had a similar experience and was advised to go to the police for assistance.

For him, the best precaution, is ensure “Find my phone” device is always on. Victims he added could also track phone using the IMEI number.

“But you know how the Nigerian police operates, you would need their help to track down the criminals, and this would cost you money”.
