Stampedes At Palliative Centres: Police Reels Out Dos And Don’ts

Following stampedes recorded at palliative centres in Ibadan, Anambra and Abuja that claimed many lives, the police has reeled out a number of dos and don’ts.

The dos and don’ts address both organisers of such palliative centres and Nigerians who troop there to benefit.

This is even as the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed Commissioners of Police in charge of Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, to investigate the stampedes

Speaking through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, also hinted that the disasters could have been averted, had the organisers contacted the police.

Here is a list of the dos and don’ts from the police:

1. the general public who would want to benefit from such distributions should tread with caution, prioritizing their safety, to avoid unforeseen calamities.
2. Commissioners of the affected states should carry out thorough investigations into these ugly incidences for further legal actions.
3. Government officials, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations should work collaboratively towards establishing a comprehensive and organised framework for distributing palliatives.
4. Groups and organisers of palliative centres should ensure the involvement of security agencies as negligence on their part is criminal and would not be overlooked, as provided for in Section 196 of the Penal Code and Sec. 344 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
