Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has described as undemocratic and unjustifiable, a Federal High Court ruling directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister some political parties.
The political parties affected in the court directive are African Democratic Congress, the Action Peoples Party, the Action Alliance, the Accord Party and the Zenith Labour Party
Condemning the directive in an X post today, the human rights activist cum politician, as not only undemocratic but also inconsistent with the principles of a multi-party democracy.
“I totally condemn the deregistration of political parties that have already concluded their primaries and are preparing for general elections. Such an action is undemocratic and unjustifiable in a multi-party democracy, it shall not stand,” he wrote on the post.
The Eagle reports that Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, had in a ruling ordered INEC to deregister five political parties for allegedly failing to meet constitutional requirements for continued registration.

According to the court, the parties are in breach of the provisions of Section 225 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The parties, the court said, should be removed from the list of recognised political parties since they did not meet the requirements as stipulated by law.
The section empowers INEC to deregister political parties that fail to secure elective positions during elections at the federal, state and local government levels.
The Eagle reports that Sowore, was at the centre of a commotion at the Eagle Square last Friday, when police fired tear gas to deter demonstrations against insecurity, during which he collapsed.
They were marching from the popular Berger Bus Stop towards Eagle Square in Abuja to demand an end to rising insecurity, the release of abducted school children, and improved governance.
