Son Slams Soft Tottenham Team-Mates After 2-1 West Ham Loss

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-Min said his team had grown “soft” after they lost their last four games in a row.

Spurs were jeered off at the final whistle after their slide from leading the league by five points to missing out on Champions League qualification. Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse scored goals to lead West Ham to an amazing comeback victory against Spurs, which proved to be Ange Postecoglou’s bubble popping. Son was substituted in the 88th minute of the West Ham match because he sustained a knock to his back and was unable to continue.

Talking after the game, Son said [via The Daily Mail]: “Losing that game is unacceptable. We have got the lead five times in a row now. West Ham are always tough to play against but we were soft. In the Premier League, you don’t know what will happen in the end. You have to kill a game. It’s unacceptable. Players have to take responsibility – the fans don’t deserve this.

“You have to play with more energy, especially at home. Whether we deserve it or not, we have to move on and bounce back. It’s disappointing for the fans.”

Postecoglou feels that his team has lacked conviction and has refused to assign the blame for the losses on the club’s extensive injury list. The Lilywhites have now switched from battling for the title to fighting to stay in the Champions League berths this season. Throughout the season, the team has lost a number of key players, including recent additions James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

Following the game, Son also revealed that he felt that his injury was not too significant and that he could return to action as soon as their next game against Newcastle United on Sunday, December 10.
