There is global alert even as two more asteroids —2020 GE and 2024 RO11— are heading  towards our earth.

This is coming amidst studies that have shown that Asteroids are potentially dangerous, particularly near-Earth asteroids, which could cause cuts, bruises, burst ear drums, amidst other consequences.

The concern is whether or not there would be such consequences for those below in this particular incident set to happen tomorrow, September 24..

They are set to pass by Earth on September 24, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, amidst illustrative pictures elsewhere of the asteroid showering

The smaller of the two, asteroid 2020 GE, measures 26 feet in diameter, about the size of a bus, is expected to come relatively close to Earth, passing at a distance of just 410,000 miles.

Despite their proximity, both asteroids pose no threat to our planet. Equipped with specialized telescopes, skywatchers may even catch a glimpse of them on the 24th.

Following closely on September 25 is another asteroid, 2024 RK7. Slightly smaller than 2024 RO11, this asteroid measures 100 feet in diameter.

Asteroids, rocky bodies made of metals and minerals, orbit the Sun just like planets, with most residing in the asteroid belt. They vary in size and shape, and while many pass safely by Earth, some enter our atmosphere. These are called meteoroids, which often burn up, creating bright streaks in the sky known as meteors, says a report in Indianexpress.com.

On the other hand, there are documentations that despite displacing much of its impact energy in the upper atmosphere, 3013 Chelyabinsk impact in Russia still sent over 1500 to seek medical attention for cuts, bruises, burst ear drums, according to the experts at University of Arizona College of Science. .

“Scientists have also studied the effects of very large size asteroid impacts (asteroids >1km across) by close geologic, geophysical and geochemical examination and mapping of the global rock record, including the fossil record to determine how life was affected.

“For example the impact of a 10-km wide (~6-miles) ‘Chicxulub asteroid that impacted earth ~66 million years ago, that killed off numerous life forms including the dinosaurs has been well documented”, it said.
