Oriire Kidnap: Oyo Govt Faults VDM’s Ransom Payment Claim

by Our Reporter

Did the Oyo State government pay any ransom concerning the release of the victims of the Oriire Kidnap incident?

Last May 16, armed assailants had invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary Schools in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities, abducting over 30 pupils and teachers, one of whom they allegedly beheaded.

A Nigerian social media personality, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), subsequently claimed in a video that the state government has paid ransom to secure the release of 46 pupils and teachers.

The state government has however come forward to counter that assertion of payment of ransom, through an official tweet.

It stated that it has only been collaborating with security agencies to ensure the victims’ release.

“The Oyo State Government did not at any time pay ransom for the release of the children and teachers abducted in Oriire LGA.

“The government has been collaborating with security agencies to ensure they are safely returned to their families,” the statement said.
