NIJ To Hold 5th Convocation; Students Share Their Views

The Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba is wearing new look in preparation for its convocation ceremonies slated for 19 and 20 April ,2018.

The school blocks have been repainted and the lawns trimmed, and other arrangements in top gear to ensure the convocation, the 5th in the series, holds successfully.

A statement on the Institute’s Facebook page, signed the Registrar, Mr Dotun Adenijo, reads in part: “The Chairman, Governing Council, Mallam Ismaila Isa OFR.mni, on behalf of the Council and the Academic Board of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos cordially invites the General Public to the 5th Convocation of the institution.

“Featuring: Conferment of Diplomas and Certificates as well as conferment of Fellowship Awards and Presentation of Prizes”

The programme of activities begins on Thursday, April 19 with a Convocation Lecture: “Nigeria: Value Re-orientation and the Media”, and it would be deliverred by Engr Vincent Maduka, First Director General, Nigerian Television Authority, NTA.

that event would be chaired by Ademola Osinubi, the Managing Director and Editor in Chief, The Punch Newspapers.

Friday, April 20 will feature conferment of Diplomas, Certificates and Fellowship Awards, and the event would be chaired by Alhaji Kabiru Abdullahi Yusuf, Chairman, Media Trust Limited.

While expressing their reaction to the upcoming event, a graduating student who does not want to be mentioned said “the convocation is indeed a wonderful step by the Institute into greater glory and a plus to the administration of Gbemiga Ogunleye for achieving this feat after many years ago”

Another graduand, Sam Paul, expressed his displeasure over the long stay of the ceremony saying it is long overdue.

“The convocation ceremony is long over due, I repeat it is long overdue since the creation of the school over forty years ago.

“Well I wish them well in this celebration and indeed it’s a plus to the school too since they have produced students of great repute over the walks of life”

He, also criticised the extra payment by graduands for academic gown, as very bad even after paying for it.

In her own opinion, Busola Badmus, said “it is long overdue and it is very bad, we had our last convocation in our ND days, which is 2013 and we are having another one after five years. It is indeed bad”

Another graduating student, Jide Toriola, was of great concern to the development  associated with the school with the upcoming convocation.

He said “it is a welcome development even though its been long that we had it but despite that it is a great one to the school, whereby having the faces of the school changed by repainting it and this will showcase the beauty of the school to the outsiders”

“Also, this is an opportunity for the school to show itself to the media world when various medium will be there to cover the occasion and a plus to be known over the place. It is a plus, I celebrate with the school on this feat”

A National Diploma One student, Opeyemi Oke, said “The convocation is a good development as per my own opinion and even the renovation of things in the school, since I and my colleagues have been curious why the school is yet to be renovated over a long period of time, I am really happy for this. Also it’s a time of enjoyments for the students, management and school entirely, I celebrate with the school”

Meanwhile, it can also be recalled that students have expressed their displeasure over a penalty of N10,000 which was set aside for students who will not show up to collect their certificate on convocation day

But the Registrar, Dotun Adenijo according to an online news site, Bounce News, has said the school’s interest is not in the penalty but in ensuring that the students come to collect their certificates.

“These cabinets, I requested for them for certificates. If they have to pay for warehousing the certificate they know how much it will cost.

“Those who have collected are not up to those who have not collected theirs. If you say you are not collecting, you will have to pay for warehousing the certificate for you.

“If you come and collect your certificate, nobody will collect any money from you. It is not the money that matters, it is compliance,”
