The Christmas is here, and here is how the national currency, the Naira to Dollar exchange rate at 1,541.16 today, has been in the last three days to one week?

This is of paramount importance as it provides the benchmark for all other transactions be they monetary or otherwise.

At the official market, the Central Bank of Nigeria data showed that the naira has strengthened marginally, rising from ₦1,541.68 on Friday to ₦1,539.55 per dollar on Monday.

In Abuja’s Wuse Zone 4, the naira closed at ₦1,640 per dollar in the parallel market, representing a gain of ₦135 compared to the previous Friday’s rate of ₦1,775.

We have seen the exchange rate at between ₦1600 and ₦1740 with an average of ₦1,671.25 overtime in the recent, but within the month.

Generally, it is good news for the planners of the economy amidst hopes of higher appreciation for the national currency.

Such hopes may be well placed if predicated on just the performance of Naira to US Dollar in the last 30 days.

The appreciation in the exchange rate of the Naira relative to the Dollar has been the reason for excited talks within currency parlors at the city centres.

Elsewhere, it is a mixed grill given the sheer number of Nigerians who depend on overseas remittances from relations to keep body and soul together.

For them, it is split allegiance: one praying for a better economy home, of which a strong national currency is part determinant; but on the other hand, relieved each time that the Dollar to Naira exchange rate had soared in favour of the former.

Just a dollar wired from across the seas could amount to so much upon hitting Nigerian shores.
