Michael Gove -Britain’s New Coal Mine And Implications For The Economy
Michael Gove, Britain’s Levelling Up, Housing & Communities Secretary has given approval for first United Kingdom (UK) coal mine in decades.
The project worth £165million is on the edge of Whitehaven in Cumbria, and is its approval comes amidst climate change concerns, reports show.
The proposed mine would dig up coking coal for steel production in the UK and across the world, and is projected to be in operation for 50 years.
However campaigners say it has left affected Britain’s climate change reputation.
The project is back on stram eight years after, having been unveiled in 2014, and promises to create about 500 jobs.
“The Secretary of State has agreed to grant planning permission for a new metallurgical coal mine in Cumbria as recommended by the independent planning inspector”, a spokesperson from Mr Gove’s Department was quoted as saying.
“This coal will be used for the production of steel and would otherwise need to be imported. It will not be used for power generation.

The mine seeks to be net zero in its operations and is expected to contribute to local employment and the wider economy”.
“Greenhouse gas emissions from burning coal – such as in steel and power plants – are seen as the single biggest contributor to climate change, and weaning countries off coal is considered vital to achieving global climate targets”, observed a mailonline report on the development. .

A strong opponent of the project is chair of Britain’s independent Climate Change Committee, John Gummer, who has earlier described the project as “absolutely indefensible”.
The question now is: will this project lift or negatively affect the administration of Michael Gove?
