As Nigerian joins the rest of the world to celebrate May Day 2026, the Federal Government has made some important promises to the generality of Nigerian workers.
The Eagle, as part of its commitment to improved welfare for the hardworking Nigerian workforce, hereby captures the key promises of the government celebrating May Day 2026.
Note that these were delivered by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Muhammad Dingyadi, during the celebration on Friday in Abuja.
The 2026 May Day celebration has the theme “Insecurity, Poverty, Bane of Decent Work.”
First, the minister described Nigerian workers as the backbone of national growth, productivity and sustainable development.
He declared: “Without labour, there can be no progress, productivity or sustainable national development.
“Nigerian workers remain the driving force behind the nation’s growth and shared prosperity.
“The strength of Nigeria lies in the resilience, dedication and sacrifices of its workers,” he said.
Commendation
Commending Nigerian workers for their resilience, dedication and sacrifices in spite of the prevailing economic and security challenges, Dingyadi said May Day 2026 theme reflected the realities confronting workers nationwide.
According to him, insecurity and economic hardship continue to affect families, workplaces and national productivity.
He said President Bola Tinubu’s administration remained focused on national security, job creation, food security and youth empowerment.
Assurance on minimum wage implementation
The minister assured workers that the recently implemented minimum wage was only the beginning of broader wage reforms.

“Decent work must never be compromised at any level,” Dingyadi said.
He said government was investing in agriculture, technology and infrastructure to expand sustainable employment opportunities.
The minister highlighted ongoing labour reforms, including the review of employment policies, labour laws and occupational safety frameworks nationwide.
Dingyadi said government was also intensifying efforts to secure workplaces and communities, stressing that productivity could not thrive under fear and insecurity.
