LASU Students’ Affairs Dean Removed Over Alleged Certificate Racketeering

Allegations of certificate racketeering published by an online medium has cost the Dean of Students Affairs of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo. The report which led to tre removal of Professor Tajudeen Olumoko November 9.

A report by an unnamed online media outfit, had alleged that certificate racketeering syndicate had been entrenched in the Lagos State-owned university and could be procured at the N2m and N3m. Almost immediately Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science has stepped in as Dean of Students Affairs (DSA) on acting capacity though.

A report in Punch quotes a source in saying, “Yes, it is true, Olumoko has been removed and Abatan has taken over as DSA. This happened yesterday, (Tuesday).”

By the report, there were indications that the school would widen the scope of investigations, to find out who else had been involved in the certificate racketeering. Also, The PUNCH reports that the Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday, said it would invite the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Akibu, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Senate of the tertiary institution and other top staff over allegations of extortion and certificate racketeering levelled against the school recently.

Issues of admission and certificate racketeering are not totally new in the university. The Eagle reports that in February 2021, LASU management sacked Two non-academic staff of over alleged admission racketeering.

Two workers were issued warning letters while a lecturer was ordered to refund over N9million or get sacked.

Those who were given the boot were in the Registry.
