Lagos State Consumer Rights Agency Sensitises NIJ Students

The Lagos Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) on Thursday brought its consumer rights enlightenment programme to the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) Lagos.

Speaking, a LASCOPA official, Mrs Folashade Ashaye, said the agency was established to engender a mechanism for consumers’ protection, towards ensuring that consumers had value for their money.

She said it was also to create sustainable confidence in them.

She advised the students of the principle of rights to safety, advising them to shun products hazardous to health, citing example with smoking.

Other necessities she mentioned included the right to be informed to enable consumers make informed choices, and protection from dishonest advertisement and labeling.

Others according to her, were, the right to seek redress, to receive a fair settlement of just claims, including compensation from shoddy goods and unsatisfactory services.

The right to consumer education, the consumer has a right to acquire knowledge and skills needed to make informed, confident choice about product and services.

Also spoken about were the right to satisfaction of basic need, to have access to basic essential goods and services, adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, and sanitation;

Right to healthy environment, to live in an environment which is non-threatening to the well-being of present and future generations to come;

The right to choose, to be able to select from a range of products and service, offered at competitive price with an assurance of favorable quality.

The right to be heard, to have consumer interests represented in the making and undertaking of government policy, and in the development of products and services.

Again Mrs Faolasha enlightened the students about exposure of plastic bottled drinks to sunlight is harmful to consumers’ health according to the research and experimentation result gathered.
