Lagos Airport Finally Reopens Runway

Four months after being shut down by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the domestic runway (18L/36R) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos was reopened for airline operations earlier today.

The runway illumination was finished by FAAN sometime last week, according to the NOTAM. However, the facility’s reopening was postponed until a reliability test on it was completed.

Nairametrics disclosed that an Air Peace flight was the first to use the runway for departure this morning. The aircraft, a Boeing 737 with the registration number: 5N-BLU, departed Lagos for Kano at 06:18 hours today.

More information disclosed by Nairametrics revealed, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA’s Aeronautical Information Services), airlines are using the runway illumination for their first flights out of Lagos today.

Prior to its shutdown, the runway could only perform sunrise services, but FAAN had planned to install approach lights, runway lights (threshold and center, edge light), and other equipment there.

According to FAAN, the runway will operate both sunrise and sunset flights following the installation of the additional aids, substantially reducing the workload for operators.
