Israel Breaking news: Air Force Officers Express Concern About “Threats to democracy”

Israel Breaking news: Former senior Israeli Air Force Officers have expressed concerns over what they consider as threats to democracy in Israel.

This perceived threat to the democratic foundation of the Jewish nation they fear, would come from incoming president, Benjamin Netanyahu.

The former officers, 1,197 in number have thus written to the country’s top jurists expressing such fears.

“We were all ready to sacrifice our lives for the country throughout our years as combat pilots. Even after serving in the Air Force, we continued to take part in building the state to the best of our ability,” the Times of Israel quotes them as saying.

The letter was addressed Supreme Court Chief Justice Esther Hayut, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, Knesset legal adviser Sagit Afik, and other senior members of Israel’s judicial system.

The Eagle reports that this is coming amidst scheduled swearing in of the new government of Netanyahu on Thursday.

We come from all levels of society and all over the political spectrum… but what we all have in common today is the fear that the democratic state of Israel is in danger,” they said.

It is Netanyahu’s third coming to the exalted seat, and the Likud leader is expected to swear in his governing coalition composed of far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties on Thursday, according to the speaker of the law making arm, the Israeli Knesset, Yariv Levin.

Also known as Bibi, Netanyahu served as the ninth prime minister from 1996 to 1999 and again from 2009 to 2021. He is currently serving as Leader of the Opposition and Chairman of Likud – National Liberal Movement.

Though born on 21 October 1949, in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu was raised both in Jerusalem, and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States of America.

He is almost synonymous with Israel politics of this era, having been the longest-serving prime minister in the Jewish nation.
