How FIFA Rules Block Aubameyang From Chelsea Exit

In January, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reportedly drew interest from Atletico Madrid and AC Milan, but FIFA regulations forbade a Chelsea exit.

The Gabonese attacker joined Stamford Bridge only in the summer of 2022, yet he was left off the 25-man Champions League roster for the Blues because of his rapid decline in west London’s pecking order.

The 33-year-old was desperate to get regular playing time, thus there were rumors of a transfer during the winter transfer window.

According to Standard Sport, Milan and Atletico Madrid were both interested in signing Aubameyang, but FIFA regulations forbid a player from playing for more than two teams in a single season. Aubameyang has already played for Barcelona and Chelsea in the 2022–23 season.

Aubameyang previously scored 13 goals in 24 games for Barcelona, so a return to Camp Nou would have been possible.

However, the Liga club was unable to consider a contract because of Financial Fair Play issues.

Chelsea is operating with a 33-man roster following a tumultuous January transfer window that saw seven players arrive and only one player go, with Aubameyang being completely benched for the most recent 0-0 rivalry game with Fulham.
