How FG Aims to Improve National Grid Operation Using VPN

The Federal Government (FG) through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has implemented a high-tech strategy known as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) as a halt measure to upgrade the national grid.

According to NAN, while a long-term network automation system is being deployed, the technology will enhance the national grid’s real-time operations.

Director of TCN,  Mr. Sule  Abdulaziz, said that this was coming at a time when the Minister of Power, M Abubakar Aliyu, has tasked agencies with innovative ways to improve electricity supply to Nigerians.

Abdulaziz noted that significant progress has been made in the acquisition of the new Energy Management System (EMS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) schemes, but as a responsible organization, the aim is to use a stop-gap technology while awaiting the new SCADA.

He also claimed that the company has been able to decrease instances of system failure thanks to greater cooperation with other participants in the electrical value chain.

In light of this, Abdulaziz revealed that TCN was building two new National Control Centres in Abuja and Osogbo.

According to him, the National Control Centre and other technology systems will improve the stability of the national grid.

Speaking on the export of electricity to other countries like Niger, Benin, Togo, Abdulaziz claimed that the regional market would let GenCos export power to more West African nations that the TCN transmission network will be able to reach.

Regarding the TCN’s remapping of its investments in the power industry, he stated that with this exportation of power, the Federal Government might gain more foreign currency from that for national development.
