Great Opportunity To Study Medicine Beginning This Session

A great opportunity for Nigerian students especially from the Southwest desiring to study medicine in a specialist university may have opened.

It would be happening off the vision and resolve of the Lagos State Government to convert the Lagos State University College of Medicine into a full-fledged, stand-alone medical university.

This would be commencing in the current 2025/25 academic session, according to the Ministry of Tertiary Education

Mr. Mamud Hassan, Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Tertiary Education, said yesterday in Lagos, that the takeoff of the university would be in fulfilment of a promise of the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu, even as a meeting to work out the modalities had already been convened.

“In furtherance of efforts by Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to provide an internationally standardised college of medicine and an excellent healthcare system for the people of Lagos State, the government, through the Ministries of Tertiary Education, Health, and Lagos State University College of Medicine, has convened a meeting with key stakeholders on the establishment of a stand-alone medical university in Lagos State”.

Sule added: “The objective of the meeting was to ensure Lagos has a medical university capable of bridging the existing gap in the training of medical personnel and improving the healthcare delivery system in the state.”

In addition to establishing such a university for students to study medicine, the Lagos State government reiterated commitment to building capacity in the sector.

According to Sule, it was the desire of the government to enhance the capacity of medical doctors and others in the medical field to meet global standards.

He also advised the relevant agencies in the state that such an institution should be able to meet the needs of Lagos residents and indeed those of Nigerians needing medical attention.

The Eagle reports that quality healthcare is still scarce in the country, and aside opportunity that the latest initiative offers those who desire to study medicine, patients would have better chances of accessing medicare.
