For Killing A Bird Worth N1m Three Minors Arraigned In Court

Allegedly for killing a bird worth N1m, three minors have been arraigned in court.

They were docked yesterday at an Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court, for what the court had dubbed malicious damage, NAN reports.

The news report cites the Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Olubu Apata, as telling the court that the defendants committed the offence on June 11 in Usi-Ekiti.

The defendants whose addresses were not given were alleged to have killed a peacock worth N1 million belonging to one Agbetuyi with intent to steal it.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 421 and 306 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the defendants, Mr Eric Omotoso, urged the court to grant them bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, admitted them to bail in the sum of N50,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

She adjourned the case until July 17 for hearing.

The Eagle reports that the peacock is a bird of increasing interest. On its entry on the peacock, the Britannica.com submits that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red list classifies the blue peafowl as a species of least concern. It adds:

“However, the green peacock is classified by the IUCN as an endangered species. The green peacock’s population declined significantly during the latter half of the 20th century because of overhunting and the destruction of large parts of its natural habitat; the species is now thought to number between 10,000 and 20,000 adults.

“The IUCN has classified the Congo peafowl as a vulnerable species. Its population has fallen to fewer than 10,000 adults because of hunting and habitat loss..”
