Nigeria’s FIFA U17 team, the Flaming Flamingos has done the nation proud, winning a first bronze medal at the 2022 FIFA U-17 female competition.
In a third place match played today in Mumbai, India, the Flaming Flamingos beat Germany 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw at regulation time.
Agency reports indicate that the games saw the Germans on a brighter scale keeping possession, and building confidence.
This eventually paid off in in the 5th minute when Marie Steiner latched on a cross from Laura Gloning to put in their first goal.
The applause trailing the goal quickly died down as it was ruled offside relying on the verdict of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Nigeria’s forward Opeyemi Ajakayem charged the tide in 21st minute, by scoring, even while Goalkeeper Faith Omilana saved a shot from Gloning five minutes later,.
Chidera Okenwa on the Nigerian side missed what should have been her country’s second goal, left face to face with the Germany keeper.
Reports showed that the Flamingos continued mounting pressure during the second half and were more fortunate this time.

Aminat Omowunmi Bello, headed powerfully into the net from defender Miracle Usani’s corner kick, in the 48th minute.

Other goals came from Edidiong Etim, who came in as substitute to replace Okenwa for Nigeria,
Veit Jella for Germany and Paulina Platiner for Nigeria, making 3-2.
