Environmentalist, Social Commentator, Raises Alarm Over Devastating Flooding At Iju-Ishaga

A Nigerian environmentalist and social commentator, has raised alarm over what he describes as devastating flooding and other drainage problems plaguing Iju-Ishaga community, Lagos.

Teniola, Mudashir Oladipupo, who referenced with the five neigbourhoods of Akinwande, Omo-iya dun, Olushesi, Akande, Rebecca-Lawal streets said the problem now required urgent attention of the relevant authorities to stem to further damages.

These and more he stated in a painstaking letter: addressed to The Eagle Newsmedia and titled: Urgent Attention Concerning Devastating Flooding In Iju-Ishaga.

According to him: “It is with great concern that I raise this matter as residents of these communities have been enduring the devastating consequences of flooding for far too long.

In recent week, especially since the beginning of this rainy season, communities in Iju-Ishaga, particularly residents of Akinwande, Omo-iya dun, Olushesi, Akande, Rebecca-Lawal streets have all experienced severe flooding incidents.

“Also, the on-going railway constructions in the community has resulted in the blockage of some existing waterways, aggravating the already bad situation of flooding.

This devastating flooding has far-reaching impact on the various aspects of the residents’ lives. Homes are submerged, displacing families and causing significant damage to their households. Businesses are forced to close, resulting in loss of livelihood and economic decline.

Furthermore, the health risks associated with stagnant water and the spread of water-borne diseases pose a serious threat to the well-being of the community.

Despite these current incidents, it is dismaying to note the apparent lack of attention and adequate response from relevant authorities. The residents of Iju-Ishaga are in dire need of immediate and sustainable solutions to address this devastating flooding. It is imperative that the government and other stakeholders take urgent action to alleviate the suffering and mitigate the risks faced by the communities.

First and foremost, an assessment of the existing drainage infrastructure should be conducted to identify areas of improvement. Investing in the construction and maintenance of efficient and properly designed drainage systems will help mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall and prevent future flooding. Additionally, waste management initiatives, including regular waste collection and recycling programmes, must be implemented to prevent blockages and ensure the free flow of water through the drainage channels.

Furthermore, public awareness campaigns should be initiated to educate the community on the importance of proper waste disposal and responsible environmental practices. Engaging the residents in these efforts will foster a sense of ownership and encourage active participation in maintaining a clean and flood-free environment.

Lastly, the government should consider providing temporary relief and support to the affected residents during the recovery phase. This could involve the provision of emergency shelters, clean water, and medical assistance to those affected by the flooding. Long-term measures such as affordable housing schemes and insurance programs should also be explored to help residents rebuild their lives in a more resilient and sustainable manner.

I implore the Lagos State Government, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area, and all relevant authorities to prioritize the well-being of the Iju-Ishaga community and take immediate action to address the recurrent devastating flooding in the area. The residents deserve a safe and secure environment where they can live without fear of losing their homes and livelihoods to floodwaters.
