Ekiti Goes Hard On Sex Offenders, Circulates Photos Of Convicted Rapists

For two convicted rapists in Ekiti State, it is almost stigma for life as they have been shamed openly with their pictures circulated publicly.

This is coming barely a month after the state raised the alarm over alleged increasing incidents of sexual violence in secondary schools across the state.

In separate statements the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale Fapohunda and his counterpart in the Education, Science, and Technology, Mr. Foluso Daramola, expressed government’s concern about the frequency of the incidents.

The Eagle understands that the government took the harsh measure in its bid to stem the tide of sexual offences in the state.

The two in the picture are already convicted sex offenders Basiru Adeyanju and Abiodun Olusola, and the government believes the measure would serve as a deterrent to others.

In addition to online platforms, their pictures are also placed at public places within the state.

They are the third and fourth convicted sex offenders publicly shamed through publishing of names and photographs, observed The Punch.

A statement from the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Olawale Fapohunda, read, “The step was in furtherance of the zero tolerance policy of the Fayemi administration to violence against women and children”.

The action, according to Fapohunda, “is aimed at discouraging sexual violence against women and minors which has reached alarming rate in the state”.

Adeyanju, formerly of Irona Street, Ado Ekiti, was convicted and currently serving a 14-year prison term at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti for the attempted rape of a 17-year-old girl.

Abiodun, on the other hand, formerly of Ijero Ekiti, is also currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in Also, recently, the police in the state arrested three men for allegedly attacking and gang-raping a young woman in the state capital.

The state Commissioner of Police, Asuquo Amba, said the men, Sola Adeyiwola, Michael Oladipo and Samuel Ogunlade, were arrested for alleged rape and cultism.

Amba, who paraded some suspected criminals, alleged that the trio were arrested by his men after forcing a woman into an uncompleted building at the Olorunsogo area of the state capital, where they allegedly gang-raped her.

The CP, who said the suspects had confessed to being members of the Eiye Confraternity, added that they also admitted to gang-raping the victim.
