Crisis Looms As Soludo Closes Onitsha Main Market

Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week, threatening an extension beyond one week.analytics section

The governor’s reason is the traders’ continued compliance with the mandatory Monday sit-at-home order declared by the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Professor Soludo gave the directive today in the midst of an on-site visit to the market.

“The government cannot stand by while a few individuals willfully undermine public safety and disregard official directives meant to restore normalcy”, he said.

“This is plain economic sabotage. We are not going to allow this. The closure is a protective measure for law-abiding citizens”, he added.

“You either decide that you are going to trade here or you go elsewhere. I am very serious about this,” the governor added.

According to the governor, the decision had become inevitable after repeated appeals on the traders not to shut the market fell on deaf ears.

“You either decide that you are going to trade here or you go elsewhere. I am very serious about this,” the governor added, even as he described the traders’ action as a quiet rebellion, which he said spoke volumes.
