Atletico Madrid Still Keen On Greenwood Despite Potential Backlash

La Liga giant, Atletico Madrid are reportedly still keen on making a move for Manchester United outcast Mason Greenwood despite an expected backlash from fans.

Barcelona, who were rumoured to be interested in signing the winger, has essentially withdrew their interest, meaning Diego Simeone’s team would have an easy run at Greenwood in the summer. The Rojiblancos are aware that there may be opposition from fans, but they think the Englishman’s skills will benefit the team, as reported by The Times.

Even if Greenwood’s return to Manchester United has not been ruled out yet, a permanent exit is the “most likely outcome” for the 22-year-old. The report also states that the Red Devils are anticipated to demand about £40 million ($51 million) for the England international, whose contract with the club expires in 2025.

Atletico believe there is potential for backlash from fans if Greenwood signs after he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour. The charges were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Services due to the “withdrawal of key witnesses” which meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

With eight goals and five assists for the Madrid-based Getafe, the 22-year-old winger has made an impression in La Liga. The next game that Greenwood and his team will play is on Saturday, March 16, against Girona.
