Arsenal Boss Defends David Raya Amid Questions Over Pressure 

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta insists he has seen no sign that goalkeeper David Raya is struggling under the pressure of replacing Aaron Ramsdale.

Arteta defended Raya following his questionable performance against Chelsea on Saturday in the Premier League, which finished in a 2-2 tie for Arsenal.

“I haven’t seen that at all,” Arteta responded when asked if the Spain international is struggling with the pressure of being the Gunners’ number one goalkeeper.

“There is a pressure of playing for big clubs where you have to win and you have to be at your best, and you have someone next to you that is pushing you every single day. But we can go player by player or position by position – you will tell me what’s happening with the left-back, the holding midfielder. That’s the debate and that’s the beauty of the game as well. And the fact that you have a lot of options is going to make those talks more frequent.”

After coming on loan from Brentford, Raya was initially Aaron Ramsdale’s backup; however, after the September international break, he was elevated to the first-choice position and has started each Premier League and Champions League game since.

Tuesday night’s Champions League match between the Arsenal and Sevilla will take place in Spain. Ramsdale’s abrupt return to the team would be a huge statement from Arteta, who hasn’t rotated goalkeepers in Europe.
