The raging case between respected legal luminary, Afe Babalola and human rights activist, Dele Farotimi may have taken a new turn.

This is because the former has taken a step that may further jeopardise the professional reputation of the latter.

He has submitted a petition to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, seeking the removal of the human rights activist’s name from the register of legal practitioners in Nigeria.

In the petition Afe Babalola alleges that Farotimi violated several provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct for lawyers.

A report from Vanguard cites a lawyer from the firm stating that: “While I am not officially permitted to comment extensively, this petition is not targeted at one individual alone but is about preserving the integrity of our legal system.”

“If we allow such behaviour to go unchecked, it undermines the trust the public places in us as legal practitioners. Upholding the highest ethical standards is not optional; it is a responsibility.

“The allegations against Farotimi do not only reflect on him but on the entire legal profession. We cannot remain silent while the judiciary’s reputation is jeopardized.”

The Eagle reports that Dele Farotimi, had, in his book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System made some refernces which did not go down well with Chief Afe Babalola

The latter petitioned the Ekiti State Police Command on November 9, 2024, accusing Farotimi of criminal defamation of Aare Afe Babalola, Afe Babalola & Co, and her lawyers

The controversial portions are in the book’s foreword which alleged corruption and malpractice involving Babalola, his law firm, and other legal professionals.
