Neighbourhoods Still In Fear After Hoodlums Unleash Violence

Caution still hangs in the air following a deadly confrontation by hoodlums which led to the display of dangerous weapons in the Meiran area of Lagos yesterday.

Many who were caught in the cross fire were only able to escape by divine grace, even as caution still holds sway.

A source told our correspondent that the cause of the fracas was a confrontation between groups of hoodlums, but it was not clear what the contention was all about.

However, she said, she and many others had to flee for dear life as the two sides engaged each other.

“I was about coming to Ogba for a lecture when I saw that they were already fighting there around Meiran

“I quickly turned back and went home straight” the lady said.

She said why the hoodlums engaged one another, that many parents running around to fetch their children from school, while other road users ran away.

Motorists who got to the area as at the time of the incident were forced to turn back, while some abandoned their vehicle and ran.

In a followup call this morning, she said peace had returned to the area but that people were still cautious.

The Eagle reports that the Lagos State Task Force, in continuation of its ongoing enforcement operations of ridding Lagos State of criminal elements apprehended about 32 susupects in an operation that happened on  January 6, 2026.

The operation followed repeated reports and concerns raised by members of the public regarding the growing menace of hoodlums and street urchins popularly known as “Omotaku”, who have been causing serious nuisance and safety risks on major highways.

Areas covered during the enforcement exercise included Apongbon, Fadeyi, Jibowu, Yaba Phase 1, Lagos Island, Palmgrove, Ojuelegba, Surulere, and other adjoining roads across the Island and Mainland.with the Chairman of the taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, reiterating the Agency’s resolve to ensure public safety across the State.

The chairman stressed that no stone would be left unturned in combing all nooks and crannies of Lagos to bring offenders to justice.
