Wigwe Tried Saving Then Emir

So, late late Chief Executive Officer of Access Corporation Plc, Herbert Wigwe Wigwe tried saving then Emir of  Kano from being dethroned?

Well, that has joined the league of deep revelations that have emerged since the death via an air disaster of the former banker.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was also former of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) made this revelation today while paying tribute to the late banker.

Wigwe, his wife Doreen; their son, Chizi Wigwe; and former Nigerian Exchange Group Chairman, Abimbola Ogunbanjo,  died in an air disaster while in an Airbus EC130 helicopter close to the California-Nevada border near Halloran Springs.on February 9.

Lamido Sanusi, today took turn to pay tribute, but midway, broke down in tears.

He recalled in the midst of emotions a most trying time for him as Emir of Kano, and the role that Wigwe played.

Underscoring Wigwe’s loyalty, Sanusi he said: “You know when I had problems in Kano, I called him about six months before I was told to leave Kano and I said to him, Herbert, I know you did all your best to solve all this problem, but I’m convinced that this is what is going to happen.

“He said to me, Your Highness don’t worry, whatever happens, don’t worry, we’re here for you. On the day I heard on the radio that I was dethroned the night before I knew this was going to happen and I called him and said I want to come to Lagos when it happens.

“The announcement was made at about 9 a.m. by noon Herbert had a plane in Kano. … I put my family on that plane. No message, no phone call, nothing. Just put them on that plane and send them to Lagos. Herbert received them. Put them in a hotel. Later got them flats, and got them accommodation.

“For months when I came we stayed there. I can go on and on”, Sanusi recalled, indeed affirming that Wigwe tried saving him, at least, ameliorating his travails at that time. .

He further recalled that the late Wigwe put his Personal Assistance whom he identified as Shola at his disposal for assistance where necessary.

Like they say, one good trust deserves another. so, because Wigwe tried saving then Emir, his gesture solidified their relationship as inferred by Sanusi. The later als recalled that he later placed Wigwe in charge of a trust fund he set up for his children.

“I’m placing you in charge of this trust for the education of my children because I know that even if I died I did not leave any money, you would educate my children.”

Similar sentiments, amidst tears, were also shared by Africa’s Richest man and Chairman Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote yesterday while he too was eulogising Wigwe.

“Herbert was a visionary, and his legacy in philanthropy will never be forgotten. He was a pillar of strength and support for me and my family.

“He was proud to be part of my success story and I am proud to name him my devoted friend, mentee and brother”, Dangote had said.
