McTominay, Maguire Hailed By Former Manager Solskjaer 

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, praised Scott McTominay  and Harry Maguire, saying he “knew they had it in them”.

After losing the captaincy and making an incredible recovery to take back a starting position, Maguire’s perseverance in the face of hardship was commended by Solskjaer. Following a difficult period in his career, Maguire has made a comeback, and the 50-year-old boss feels vindicated for having given him the armband for the first time despite significant criticism following his big-money transfer from Leicester City.

Solskjaer stated in an interview with Nettavisen: “I think he has dealt with it in a fantastic way (stripping of captaincy). It has not been easy. I have kept in touch with him and I have nothing but praise for the guy.

“He has been in it. It’s not easy to leave Manchester United because you know there’s a downturn almost everywhere you go. You get paid for your efforts when you are that type, when you are a good footballer and show that you have a heart for the club, I guess he has gradually learned who to listen to. I am very happy that Harry in particular shows what kind of player he is, but not least what kind of type and person he is. That’s why I made him captain. We in Norway call it ‘hell wood’.”

Following the October international break, McTominay also found his best form again, and he has been a crucial component of Erik ten Hag’s setup in the middle of the park. In the summer, he was likewise viewed as surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and had the option of leaving the team. To Solskjaer’s delight, he ultimately flipped the odds in his favour by choosing to fight for his position.

“I knew they had it in them, and I think it’s these types of people who get paid for their efforts and get paid back for what kind of people they are… They are the kind of people you want in a team,” he said.

Maguire and McTominay will try to maintain their current level of play and move United closer to the top four spots. On Sunday, the Red Devils travel to Goodison Park, where they will need to perform well in order to win three points.
