Desist From Tarnishing NIJ’s Image, Provost Admonishes Students

The Provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, has admonished students of the school to desist from acts capable of tarnishing the image and reputation of the school.

He said doing that amounted to the students themselves tarnishing their own reputations being carriers of the NIJ certificate.

Mr Adefaye gave the admonition today at the NIJ auditorium in Ogba Lagos, while presiding over an interactive session of students and the faculty.

He also advised the students to work to up their grades and be regular in class as those who fail to make 70 per cent class attendance would not be allowed to sit exams in line with the school rules.

“Whoever destroys the school, has destroyed his or her certificate but not the lecturers as the lecturers are not carriers of NIJ’s certificate”, Adefaye reminded them.

In reaction to issue of challenge encountered in the process of courses registrations, the provost explained that the school portal had been configured to limit human interferences to avoid data manipulation by unauthorised persons.

“The portal administrator has confirmed that the problems of students complaining of being given wrong department came from the students, because the portal had saved what they initially registered before seeking a change of department”, he said, adding that altering any information at the level came with a cost.

“The concerned students filled their forms wrongly and they have to buy the APP to rectify the problem”, he said.

Speaking earlier, the Deputy Provost, Dr Dele Omojuyigbe, had equally warned against tarnishing of the integrity of the NIJ saying, the implication was expensive.

He reiterated that faculty decisions were mostly taken in the interest of the students, and that staff members were usually on hand to ensure that things went well, both for the students and the school.

He underscored the importance of meeting the attendance benchmark, payment of school fees, and decent dressing.

He added that the students should maintain the procedure for the payment of their school fees

“Students should always dress responsibly and they should not undermine the management of the school and the security personnel,” he said, adding that they had additional opportunity of engaging the authorities by utilising the suggestion boxes and routing their grievances through other authorised channels.
