55 Year Old Pickpocket Excited To Celebrate 100th Arrest

To be indicted of crime is not good in itself, but to celebrate 100^th arrest could be described as something way off, but that is 55 Year Old Pickpocket, ‘Bonda’ Arumugam, for you.

On Thursday, he ‘celebrated’ his 100th arrest, according to a report in the Times of India.

Though the thought of being taken in by the law a record 100^th time is worrisome, but the Coimbatore police  have said they could not confirm the claim.

However, it is within police’s crime and criminal tracking network and system (CCTNS), that Arumugam has been involved in 72 pickpocket cases in Coimbatore city alone since 2010.

That is for a past time or occupation that he began at 14.

The native of Selvapuram in Coimbatore city is over 40 years currently.

Asked what he had been using the illegal proceeds from the trade to do, he said it had been deployed taking care of his wife and children, to drink alcohol and pay for sessions in the massage parlour

His victims include unwary commuters eager to catch the next ride to their destinations, and they just find their jewelleries, mobile phones and wallets disappear.

According to the report, Thursday he met his waterloo, and like the proverbial from frying pan to fire, Arumugam was fleeing from a bus passenger from whom he had stolen when he landed into the open arms of the police.

According to the account, it was a police team led by sub-inspector Marimuthu that was waiting at the Prakasam bus stop on Big Bazaar Street-Oppanakara Street junction when the opportunity to rein the man came.

Arumugam was nabbed following a complaint by a bus commuter Sabir Ahamed, 42.

The latter said the suspect had picked his mobile phone

“Arumugam told us that he was being arrested for the 100th time. He does no work, only steals from bus commuters,” said a police officer.

“If commuters attempt to catch him, Arumugam raises a hue and cry, protesting his innocence loudly, and escapes in the ensuing confusion. He also strikes in the evenings as police then do not detain him at police stations to avoid any custodial death,” said the officer”, the newspaper reported..

Aside the case of this 55 Year Old Pickpocket, cyber crime, economic crime generally, are all issues of concern to the government, restating the need for an effective economy and financial crime commission.
