Vice President Kamala Harris is the leading Democratic contender to take on Donald Trump after President Joe Biden’s decision to bow out of the presidential race.

In his letter on social media, Biden, 81, endorsed Harris, telling his fellow Democrats that “it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

The White House contest had been between two elderly white men, but Biden’s decision means Trump, 78, will likely face off against the much younger Harris, 59. She would make history as the first woman of color to become a major party’s presidential nominee.

Harris is the only Democratic candidate who can take control of the Biden campaign’s huge war chest. The Biden campaign has already formally amended filings with the Federal Election Commission so Harris can use the funds if she secures the Democratic nomination.

“Specifically, because Biden and Harris share a campaign committee, the Vice President and her running mate can continue using the campaign’s existing funds for the general election if she is on the Democratic ticket as either the presidential or vice-presidential nominee,” said Trevor Potter, founder and president of Campaign Legal Center, in a statement.

Federal Election Commission filings show Trump’s campaign has more cash on hand than Biden’s. The president’s campaign ended June with $95 million raised, while Trump’s ended the month with $128 million, Reuters reported.
