Can baby girls menstruate? The answer, though shocking is simply yes, a reputable hospital and paediatrician, have said, providing reasons why.

Dr Ayobola Adebowale, known as Your Baby Doctor, calls the condition pseudo menstruation or neonatal menstruation, ascribing it to hormonal changes.

Providing insight to one of the shocking realities of life in a video, she some baby girls menstruate shortly after birth, saying though could be a course of worry, but that it is harmless.

“It occurs because your baby inside your womb was exposed to a lot of your hormones.

“When you bring them out suddenly at time of delivery, they have what we call withdrawal bleeding, which is basically menstruation, and this happens in newborn babies and it’s essentially normal.

“You have no reason to be scared. You have nothing to be worried about. Just observe the discharge and after a few days it will resolve by itself.

“You really don’t have to do anything and you have no reason to be worried and that child is not a witch,” she said.

“Baby girls can have some minor vaginal bleeding. It can start any time from 2-10 days of life. This is normal and called false menses”.

As to the probable cause, the hospital added:

“The cause is the sudden drop-off in the mother’s estrogen (a hormone) after birth.

“The blood-tinged or pink discharge should not last more than 3 or 4 days.

She, however, added that if the bleeding persists, parents should consult a doctor for a proper check-up.

The above two explanations belie beliefs elsewhere some baby girls menstruate because they had been bewitched or under some kind of spell.

Rather than falling for such fetish beliefs, the hospital advises concerned parents to seek expert advice when faced with such knotty health queries.
