Will Aston Villa Martinez Be Punished For Mistake?

Days after winning the Yashin Trophy, Emi Martinez committed a costly error for Aston Villa, but he will not be punished.

The Argentina international was named the world’s greatest goalkeeper at the 2023 Ballon d’Or event. He helped his side win the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. For the most part, Martinez has long been a model of consistency for both his team and his nation.

The mysterious 31-year-old did, however, deliver a bomb in his most recent Premier League game. Martinez had a bad role in Villa’s 2-0 away loss to Nottingham Forest, when he palmed up a speculative shot from Orel Mangala only to have the ball loop beyond him and over the line.

Errors such as that are few and far between in Martinez’s game, and Villa boss Unai Emery will not be taking any action against the South America. The Spanish tactician has said: “We are human and we can make mistakes. I am never punishing the mistakes of the players because I want to try to get confidence in everybody, practising, trying to do everything well. Of course, when we are facing other teams we have to get better than them, but we are never punishing the mistakes. Not only for Emiliano, that is for everybody.”

Martinez is probably going to start in goal for Villa against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday in the Europa League. Prior to the next international break, Villa will play one more Premier League match, against Fulham.
