Why We’re Giving FG 14-Day Nationwide Strike Notice –Labour

Organised Labour unions in the country have given the federal government a 14-day nationwide strike notice, stating reasons why.

The unions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) said the ultimatum is based on the government’s failure to implement the 16-point agreement between it and organised labour reached on October 2, 2023.

They add that the 16 point agreement covered areas that would have ameliorated the suffering currently being experienced by Nigerians but that the federal government had refused to do anything about it.

The Eagle reports that feelers from different quarters of the country, show indeed that there is hardship in the country.

From person to person conversations to trends on social media, Nigerians have been calling the government to do something to end their suffering now characterized amongst others by high prices of goods and services, and falling exchange rate of the naira.

They describe the suffering as consequences of the “ill-conceived and ill-executed IMF/World Bank-induced hike in the price of PMS and the devaluation of the naira. These dual policies have had, as we predicted, dire economic consequences for the masses and workers of Nigeria.”

“it is regrettable that we are compelled to resort to such measures, but the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers and the massive hardship leave us with no choice.

“Constrained by this development and recognising the urgency of the situation and the imperative of ensuring the protection and defence of the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens, the NLC and TUC hereby issue a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government to honour their part of the understanding within 14 days from tomorrow, the 9th day of February 2024.”

The latest The Federal Government had among other things promised the implementation of a N35,000 wage award for civil servants which however has not been paid up to date.

A 14-Day Nationwide Strike would indeed leave a lot of recursions on the country.

Aside the credibility bashing it would bring to the Senator Bola Tinubu led government, it would further affect economic activities which severe implications for peace and stability.
