Ten Hag no longer feels the same way about Varane, and their relationship has all but broken down. There is believed to have been an open discussion following Varane’s benching for the Manchester derby last month, according to The Daily Mail. The Frenchman has only made three replacement appearances since then. According to reports, the 30-year-old feels underappreciated because Jonny Evans was selected before him and Victor Lindelof was selected to play alongside Harry Maguire when Evans sustained an injury two weeks ago against Luton Town.

Bayern Munich has expressed interest in signing Varane for a £25 million ($31 million) transfer in January, despite the German team’s inability to pay his £340,000 weekly salary. Sir Jim Ratcliffe owns Nice, therefore adding Jean-Clair Todibo could create a conflict of interest for United, even though the club has discussed finding replacements.

“Maguire took his chance when Varane was absent. When the moment is there, you take it and the other has to fight back,” Ten Hag told beIN Sports on Thursday.
