Why Mbappe Was Left On Bench As France Slumped To 2-1 Loss Against Germany

Didier Deschamps has explained why Kylian Mbappe was benched in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss for France to Germany.

The Paris Saint-Germain star sat on the bench and didn’t even get a chance to be introduced as a replacement during France’s international friendly against Germany. Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller both scored once as Germany triumphed, with Antoine Griezmann’s late penalty serving only as a consolation.

Mbappe hurt his knee during Monday’s team training, according to France boss Deschamps, who revealed this after the match. Also, he reaffirmed that the injury was not significant and that benching him was only a precaution.

Speaking to L’Equipe channel after the Germany clash, Deschamps said: “Kylian has a problem with his patellar tendon following yesterday’s training (Monday). It’s not serious, but it’s a problem that bothers him and with risks too. If he couldn’t start, he shouldn’t have been brought on either.”

Germany bounced back strongly by defeating France 2-1 as Rudi Voller assumed the reins as interim manager for the first time following their terrible 4-1 loss to Japan in their most recent friendly encounter, which led to the dismissal of Hansi Flick as the head coach of the national team.

The players will return to their respective clubs this weekend when club football resumes after the break for international action. It is uncertain whether Mbappe will be ready to play in PSG’s upcoming Ligue 1 match against Nice.
