Who really is behind this morning’s raid on the residence and office of the immediate past governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode?

This is the question on the lips of many Nigerians, given the divergent reactions that have trailed the incident.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which the governor alleges carried out the raid has denied ownership, according to a report in Daily Trust.

On the other hand, other account quotes t spokesman of the anti-graft agency, Tony Orilade, as saying that Ambode was under a corruption probe,

In the account, the operatives stormed his residence in his hometown of Epe at about 9:35 a.m.

Recall that billions of naira were allegedly misappropriated in the four years of Mr Ambode in office, and detectives have been busy trying to link key players with the said missing money.

About two weeks ago, multiple bank accounts holding billions and linked to Mr Ambode were frozen as part of the probe.

Mr Ambode denied links to both the accounts and any allegations of corruption while in office.

However, reacting to this morning’s s raid, Ambode appealed to his supporters and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding.

A statement credited to his media aide, Mr. Habib Aruna, credits Ambode as saying that the EFCC  till date, has not opened any direct communication with him on any issue, adding that he was ready and willing to respond if or when they do so.

But Ambode’s statement confirmed there was a raid on his Epe Country home and Parkview Ikoyi residence.

“These searches were carried out extensively and at the end of the exercise the operatives left without any incident,” the statement said.

It added, “The former Governor reiterates that the EFCC has till date not had any direct communication with him on any subject matter whatsoever and if or when it occurs he is ready and willing to respond.”

“The former governor wishes to assure his supporters and the generality of Lagosians to continue to remain calm and law-abiding as there is no cause for alarm.”

Ambode also reiterated his belief in the rule of law and due process and remains grateful for the opportunity to have served Lagos State diligently and conscientiously.

It would be recalled that Ambode, had insisted that no account of his contained N9.9bn alleged to have been frozen by the anti-graft agency.
