What Student Did In College Bathroom That Made Police Arrest..

A student is now a guest of the police after doing something in college bathroom that many people would consider reprehensible.

The first year student, is reported to have aborted in the college bathroom, an incident the police is now investigation.

The incident was said to have occurred yesterday, the Lusaka Central Police Station says, citing a report it received yesterday Saturday between the hours of5pm and 6pm, the Zambian Observer says.

According to it, the matter was reported by Mr Rodgers Tembo, the 43 year old Chief Security Officer of Evelyn Hone College, located in the Zambian capital.

The report mentioned the said student as Felistus Mwanza, aged 20 of Mozambique hostel studying a Diploma course in Physiotherapy.

It added that the college bathroom incident was discovered by her fellow students who went to have a bath only to find a foetus and blood clots which they followed up to her room where they found her in a weak state.

The stunned students immediately took her to the clinic within the college and she was later transferred to Chilenje Level One hospital where she is currently admitted.

The scene was visited by police officers and foetus was taken to University Teaching Hospital mortuary where it has been deposited, the report said, adding that the student is under police guard as investigations are ongoing.

The college bathroom incident has once again brought attention, to youth living in Zambia, believed to have a high rate of adolescent pregnancy with its varying risk factors.

A study covering 2000 to 2022, is of the submission that over the last five years, the rate of adolescent pregnancy has remained very high at 29.2%, with at least 35% of young girls in rural areas giving birth before, or by, the age of 18 years.

Crediting the 2018 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey, it says there are significant rural–urban variations in adolescent pregnancies in Zambia, with rural areas having an average of 37% compared to 17% in urban areas.

“These averages potentially mask realities on the ground as some rural areas have adolescent pregnancy rates as high as 42.5% and 39.5% in Southern and Eastern Provinces respectively. Adolescent pregnancy is partly responsible for the high total fertility rate of 4.7 per woman and rapid population growth rate of 2.8%.

“Child marriages deprive adolescent girls of their sexual and reproductive health rights and curtails opportunities for them to realize their full potential and enjoyment of human rights entitlements as enshrined in various international treaties”, the study carried out by Malunga, G., Sangong, S., Saah, F.I. et al, and titled “Prevalence and factors associated with adolescent pregnancies in Zambia: a systematic review from 2000–2022”, said.
