What Caicedo Needs To Do To Succeed at Chelsea – Makelele

Chelsea’s big-money summer buy Moises Caicedo has been told “to learn” by Claude Makelele as £115m man continues to struggle at Stamford Bridge.

Since his record-breaking summer transfer from Brighton to Chelsea for £115 million ($146 million), the Ecuadorian has been under tremendous pressure to perform. He hasn’t, however, been able to establish himself as a reliable midfield player and has, more often than not, made headlines for the wrong reasons.

After Caicedo put in two awful displays against Wolves and Brentford, Ally McCoist, a former striker for Scotland, was justified in calling the former Brighton player the season’s worst bust. The Chelsea icon thinks Caicedo still has more learning to do in order to succeed with the Blues, despite the fact that Makelele was not as hard on him.

Speaking to  The Athletic, Makelele said: “He needs to learn. He’s an amazing player. If Chelsea don’t give him the platform with these details he will struggle and it will be difficult and he won’t play at a higher level than he was before in the Premier League (with Brighton). He needs to learn, to read — it’s very important for people to give him this message.

“It’s not about the physical quality, it’s about the smarts. Understanding about when to make an impact, when not to, learning about where your team-mates are, you have to use this position to read the game. You need to have leadership in this position. You don’t play for yourself, you play for everyone else to be OK in the team. Because the manager can’t do anything anymore, you have to guide the way to play and the way to win.”

Caicedo needs to improve; he has just not been good enough. He must quickly establish his value in the eyes of the Chelsea board and supporters, as he is accustomed to the English climate. If he continues to perform poorly, it is unclear how long Mauricio Pochettino will support him.
