‘We Are Tired Of Askaris Coming Here For Free Food’
The motive of every hotel owner is to sell food and drinks to make profit, not being forced to offer free food to a set of uniformed men.
An that is the point that hotel owners in Nairobi are trying to prove having been subjected to such intimidations by some uniformed men askaris.
Askari is Somali word for police.
These much emerged after a meeting of the Nairobi County Health Committee with some hotel owners in the city.
The latter complain that they are tired of feeding the uniformed men also called kanjos, who in addition, ask for transport fare when going.
“When some of the askaris come for inspection, they end up eating food without paying. Some even ask for transport.

We Are Tired Of Askaris – “They have to know that we are running a business and our main objective is to make a profit,” said one hotel owner quoted by Nairobi News
There was also report of another hotel owner complained that she feeds seven officers in a day and this affects her business and mental health.
They say some of the kanjos go to the extent of teaching them how to to arrange their restaurants, which they reason is not supposed to be.
“We are tired of being harassed by askaris. Some of them are very petty. They should do their work and also let us do our job,” said another hotel owner.
We Are Tired Of Askaris 3 There is however another side to the issue. The city faces the prospects of cholera outbreak with a health committee mobilising a sensitization team around the city.
The Health Committee cite 160 cholera cases have thus far been recorded, linking this to poor hygiene practices amongst the people.
The media reports the Ministry of Health confirming eight people dead in Nairobi due to the cholera outbreak.

As much as the hotel operators welcome intervention by the authorities, they are however taing exception to being teleguided on how to run their business.
