[VIDEO] Peter Obi: How Gunmen Threatened Obidients In Enugu

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, and his supporters have received threats after unidentified gunmen attacked party members who were conducting a meeting over the weekend in the Awgu Community of the Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

THEEAGLE learned that the shooters, who were believed to number four, opened fire on unprepared party members at the location of the meeting. They shot intermittently to scatter the party members.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m on Sunday.

Ikechukwu Igwebuike, the party’s council area chairman, responded to the tragedy by telling reporters that no lives were lost in the attack but that some members had been hurt.

He said, “They just stormed the venue on three motorcycles and started firing.”

Igwebuike informed that the gunmen shot in the air, attacked party members with their rifles, before disrupting the meeting.

He further stated, “We believe strongly that this is the handiwork of the opposition party,” he said, without mentioning the party.

“The windshield of one of our members’ vehicle was shattered.”

A similar incident occurred earlier on Wednesday in Nenwe, a community in the state’s Aninri Local Government Area, when several party members were also ambushed by gunmen.

The unnamed, who were also in their mid-fours, swarmed the scene on two motorcycles.

The attack was confirmed by Benjamin Ajah, the chairperson of the Labour Party in local government for the council region. He stated that the incident occurred at around 2 p.m.

The conference, according to Ajah, was originally scheduled to take place at the community secretariat but was changed to a municipal center in the neighborhood.

According to him, the new location was chosen when Israel Anih, the secretariat’s administrator, urged the party members to leave the building complex.

Mr. Anih advised against holding the meeting at the secretariat, Ajah said.

According to reports, Mr. Anih, the secretariat’s administrator, belongs to the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ajah further narrated, “We just finished arranging the hall and just about saying our opening prayer for the meeting, then the armed men came and pursued us.

“They started shooting and we ran,” he said.

Ajah informed that no life was lost to the incident, adding that the incident has been reported to the police.

State police have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.

There are rumors that the attacks may have been motivated by some People’s Democratic Party, PDP, members in the state as a result of tangible worries.

The PDP members in the state are said to be “disturbed” by the Labour Party LP’s rising popularity and increased support.

Recall that the PDP currently controls Enugu and has a history of success in the state’s elections.

To build support before 2023, Obi’s followers have recently organized million matches across the nation.

Members of the Labour Party have organized a number of “million-man-match” walks for Peter Obi and Datti Ahmed in Ogun, Lagos, Kaduna, Rivers, Benue, and other locations under the banner of the alliance for Obi’s presidency.
