The news is currently trending of a state government justifying its decision to slash sanitation workers’ allowance from to N10, 000.
This pay was N15, 000 before the government decided on the latest slash.
The sanitation workers were initially engaged in 2023 with a monthly allowance of N20,000, which was reduced to N15,000 in 2024 following a review.
But now, the workers have to make do with another downward slash, and many are left wondering what a N10, 000 pay could do to a workers, especially given that many have households and families.
Affected by the government’s decision are sanitation workers of the Operation Keep Taraba Clean programme.
The government says the slash in the allowance of sanitation workers was informed by need to manage resources.
The Chairman of the Taraba State Environmental and Sanitation Agency, Hon. Illiya Kefas, while speaking with journalists in Jalingo, said the downward slash is a directive from Governor Agbu Kefas in the bid to balance government’s financial commitments.

“Yes, we did not pay the sweepers N15,000 this month; we paid them N10,000 each,” he has been reported as saying.
He also added that the sanitation programme requires funding for different categories of workers, including supervisors, coordinators, monitoring teams as well as for waste evacuation activities across the state’s 16 local government areas.
“I have the right to ask my people to work at N10, 000. Anyone interested will work, and if you are not, you can go your way,” he has also been quoted as telling the sanitation workers.
