There is no better way to describe it than tragic birthday joke, and it has seen a man killing his girlfriend right on her birthday after chaining her hands and legs.

He then went ahead to slit the 26 year old’s throat with a razor blade, and set her ablaze.

All of these happened at a deserted spot over the weekend in Tambaram near Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, police has said.

The Eagle reports that Tamil Nadu, famous with its Hindu temples, is the southernmost state of India, tenth largest by area and the sixth largest by population.

The Police there has identified the suspect simply as Vetrimaran renamed after undergoing a gender-affirming surgery a few months ago.

Reportedly enraged that she broke off with him, and was getting closer to a workplace colleague, he murdered R Nandani, the Hindustan has reported.

It was indeed a tragic birthday Joke, as upon arrest on Sunday, Vetrimaran confessed to murdering Nandani, who worked in a software company in Chennai.

Both had been school mates and close friends at a school in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district.

They had also spend the day before together, the girl unaware of what lay in wait for her.

Not even when he led her to a deserted spot and chained her hands and legs did she realise fully what was in the offing.

The report said the girl had pleaded not to be chained but there were no affirmations that she struggled with the idea or shouted for help.

Having tied her properly, Vetrimaran went ahead to douse her with petrol and set fire.

Though Nandani was rushed to a hospital afterwards, she could not make it; she died late on Saturday night.

“No indication yet of any sexual assault. Whether Vetrimaran had displayed violent tendencies earlier is not clear. An investigation is on, The local NDTV mentions Tambaram police commissioner Amalraj as saying, adding that investigation was ongoing on the matter.
